I’m working with someone to create new covers for my Penwarrens trio of books, and I have to say it’s a lot harder than I thought it would be. That’s on me, not her. I have an image in my mind’s (sometimes questionable) eye, an image that’s probably impossible for anyone to create based on my budget. Still, we’re giving it a shot.
For me as a reader, the cover is third in importance, behind the title and behind the book blurb on the back cover. I don’t think I give letter font much attention – but then, maybe I do without knowing it. Sigh. As for the title itself, I like a good “locked-room-mystery” so almost any title with the word murder in it will get my attention (ghoulish, I know, but true). And I always bypass covers with couples in a passionate clinch, though I’m not adverse to a good romance – but not too angsty and please keep the bedroom door closed.
I’ll be promoting The Penwarrens series with its new covers as soon as they’re done, so expect to see all sorts of social media and Amazon marketing coming in the wake of their release. Bear with me as I navigate creating a media “presence,” though as an indie author, it will be a small presence.
And in the meanwhile, what gets your attention when you’re perusing books, whether in person or online? Leave a reply here or on my Facebook page and let me know your book-selecting priorities.
